King of Dinosaurs

Story:

 

Eine Insel, die von Dinosauriern und einem kleinen Jungen bewohnt wird, wird von Aliens, die die Erde beherrschen wollen, angegriffen. Gleichzeitig führt das Militär eine Rettungsmission durch, da es sich beim Jungen um einen seit sechs Jahre vermissten Sohn eines Ehepaars handelt, der nach einem Flugzeugabsturz als verschollen galt…

 

Meine Meinung:

 

Aka Dragon Prince. Nach dem Erfolg von Godzilla und Co. sprangen auch die Taiwanesen aufs Kaiju-Genre auf. Diese Filme sind leider sehr selten. Spontan kommen mir in den Sinn: The War God, The Fairy and the Devil, King of Snake, Young Flying Hero*, The Magic World of Watari** oder The Boy and a Magic Box. Ungesehen liegt noch rum: The Prince of Dragon King (= Dragon Prince 1969?) und daneben gibt es noch jede Menge weiterer verschollener Filme dieser Art.

King of Dinosaurs, der eigentlich Dinosaur Fights Against Cosmic-Men heisst, ist für Kaiju-Fans ein feuchter Traum. Der Film ist in Mix aus Kaiju- und Sci-Fi Elementen und erinnert dabei an Godzilla, King Kong, Kamen Rider, The War God oder Roboter der Sterne. Wie so oft stellt sich die Frage, ob die Effekte aus anderen (japanischen?) Filmen stammen oder selbst kreiert wurden. Obwohl ein Japaner als Action Director mitwirkte (Seiichi Fukada) würde ich verneinen, dass die Effekte geklaut sind. Inzwischen weiss ich jedoch, dass es sich bei den Dino-Szenen definitiv um geklaute Szenen aus der japanischen Serie Kaiju ouji (Monster Prince) handelt. Diese Serie ist 26episoden lang und gibt es in Japan auf LD (mässiges Cover), DVD (sehr cooles Cover) und sogar Blu-Ray (erneut sehr mässiges Cover). Diese wurde 1967 ausgestrahlt. In den USA gibt es möglicherweise DVDs mit englischen Subs.

Der Film und die Effekte-Sequenzen wirkten aus einem Guss und im Vergleich zu japanischen Kaijus massiv billiger. Das spräche gegen gestohlene Szenen/Effekte aus einem japanischen Film (oder Serie). Dennoch haben diese Effekte Charme und waren genau nach meinem Geschmack. Im Gegensatz zu Godzilla und Konsorten hat King of Dinosaurs den Vorteil, dass der Film kurzweiliger ist. Soll heissen: praktisch kein Plot und alle fünf Minuten «Action-Szenen». Und das 92 Minuten lang!

 

Mit Action-Szenen meine ich: Dinos kämpfen gegen Dinos, Junge kämpft gegen Dinos, Aliens kämpfen gegen Dinos, Aliens kämpfen gegen den Jungen, Militär kämpft gegen Aliens und Militär kämpft gegen Dinos. Das sorgt für viel Abwechslung und putzige Effekte. Dabei waren Plot, Verlauf, Originalität, Logik, Dialoge, Musik (furchtbar öde Dauerschleifen, vor allem wenn der Junge gegen die Aliens kämpft) oder Schauspielkunst zweit- wenn nicht gar drittklassig und wenig wichtig.

 

Praktisch alle Dinos in King of Dinosaurs können wie Godzilla Feuer spucken und wie in King Kong kommt im letzten Viertel noch ein Gorilla vor. Für Shaw Brothers und Kung Fu Fans interessant: Lee Tso-Nam (Wild Panther, The Leg Fighters, Im Würgegriff der gelben Schlange) war Assistant Director. 

Fazit: Must See und Pflichtprogramm für Kaiju-Fans!

Fassungen: Den seltenen Film aus Taiwan gibt es in mind. zwei ebenso seltenen Fassungen: 1. Die VHS/Betamax aus Indonesien von Suma Video unter dem Titel King of Dinosaurs = Uncut, Englisch Dubbed (im Vergleich zu Ocean Shores Englisch Dubbed Fassungen gute Synchronisation), indonesische Subs aber leider statt 2,35:1 nur in 1,33:1 und dazu noch stark gezoomt, um feste englische und chinesische Subs aus dem Bild zu schieben. Die Bildqualität ist beim Abspielen besser als es oben genannte Bilder vermuten lassen (halt abfotografiert, sah ich als Kopie beim Kollegen). 2. Das VHS aus Südkorea (mit Bildern aus einem Godzilla Film auf der Front) unter dem Titel Monster Prince. Dieses VHS dürfte in Mandarin sein und hat koreanische Subs. Andere Fassungen sind mir nicht bekannt. Der offizielle englische Titel lautet: Dinosaur Fights Against Cosmic-Men. Nachtrag Juni 2026: Inzwischen gelangte ich in den Besitz der südkoreanischen VHS von Saekyong Video Production. Dieses zeigt Bilder eines Godzilla-Filmes auf dem Front-Cover. Das VHS ziert den englischen Titel Monster Prince. Der südkoreanische Titel übersetzt lautet Dinosaur Prince. Wie erhofft handelt es sich um eine O-Ton Mandarin Fassung mit koreanischen Subs. Einzelne Passagen haben keine koreanische Subs, dafür englische und chinesische (nur einmal im Bild zu sehen, sonst ausserhalb = auch Vollbild und gezoomt, um die festen Untertitel aus dem Bild zu schieben). Der Film hat eine gute Bild- und Tonqualität. Es dürfte interessant werden, die Fassung mit der indonesischen Fassung (die Online inzwischen überall zu finden ist) zu vergleichen. Sie beginnt bereits anders und hat auch keine The End Einblendung, sondern eine "thank you" Einblendung inklusive Label-Name (siehe Bild). Der Film läuft nur 67 Minuten. Es dürfte interessant sein zu erfahren, was im Gegensatz zur indonesischen Fassung fehlt und/oder verändert wurde. Der Film war sehr abwechslungsreich und kurzweilig und hat die 2. Sichtung bestanden. Ein gefundenes Fressen für Kaiju-Fans! Die Fassungen unterscheiden sich. Die Unterschiede und Bildvergleiche sind unten aufgeführt.

aspect ratio: 

the indonesian version has sometimes a little more picture on the sides. The image appears compressed/squashed. but in other scenes the korean vhs seems to have a little bit more picture at the top and below. in the finale some scenes in the korean version have at all four sides more picture information. in the final scenes the korean vhs has more picture. 

picture quality: 

the korean vhs has a little bit a better, sharper and brighter picture quality. in some scenes the indonesian version is a little bit brighter. 

start to the film is different. in the betamax version we saw the main dinosaur screaming. in the korean vhs we saw the plane with mother, father and the baby. the plane crashes into the sea. we saw a volcano and lava. some survivers are seen in inflatable boats, then the plane explodes. the mother sees crying in the boat. after that the dinosaur fight starts in the korean vhs. there is at least one very short scene missing in the indonesien version (main dinosaur gets bitten). 

after the dinosaur fight we see in the korean version a big boat in the sea during night with two people. in the indonesian version now we see the plane crash. they go diffrent after that. after the plane crash in the indonesian version we saw our main dinosaur with the young boy and the dinosaur try to get some fruit from the tree. the boy helps out with his weapon, to get the fruit. this scene is not seen in the korean version. 

in the korean verson we see after the two people at the ship one of those guys in a small inflatable boat. the guy awakes and sees the island and starts rowing. in the indonesian version the boy swings like Tarzan in the jungle, reaches rocky mountains and calls out "dino" twice. 

in the korean version the guy checks out the island and met the boy, which killed an air-dinosaur/bird. in the indonesian version the air aliens arrive and attack first the dino and then the boy. first attacks respons from the air, then from the ground. the boy fights them on the ground. after the boy kills one of the aliens (with a throwing knife) and aliens retreat. the boy and dino walks away. after that the scene with the boat during the night starts. the hole scene before is not seen in the korean version.

after the father cronfronts a doctor/scientist after he read about the boy in the papers, there is a meeting after they met. in the korean version instead of the meeting we switch back the the boy and the jungle. the meeting is missing in the indonesian version. after that the the korean version goes back to the boy and jungle too. the boy walks through the jungle and he and his dino gets attacked again by the flying aliens. most of the scenes are identical, but there are minor changes in the order here and there. 

the scene with the doctor/scientist explaining to a group of different personns about the island is now shown too in the indonesian version. some few pits are missing in the korean version, when the military planes arrive and the fight starts. 

in the korean vhs they watching the flying alien longer from the undersea boat. in the indonesian version the undersea boat dives faster. 

later, when the aliens fight the soldiers there are twice a few little more dialogues between the soldiers in the indonesian version. during the fight soldiers vs aliens the indonesian version makes a break. we see scientists and military talk about the alien invasion. 

in the korean version the fights between soldiers and aliens go on. later the indonesian version show those scenes too. so those meeting-scene is missing in the korean version. 

later, when the soldiers, the boy and dino fights against and other creature, there are a few more dialogues between the soldiers in the indonesian version then a big part is only seen in the indonesian version. during the fight boy, dino, soliders vs. creature (during day-time) very sudden it changes to night time during the indonesian version. the soldiers monitor and control the «camp». once the creature is seen and a hopping bunny. the two soliders making fun of each other. they enter a cave. in the cave the creature is sleeping and awakes. unprovoked the soliders shoot at it. rocks falling down and outside other soliders arrive. the creature kills the two soliders and goes back deeper into the cave. after that there is day time again. the the soliders are seen in tanks. they spot the creature and attack it with the tanks. some explosions. but the creature and his weapon (like spiderweb) makes the tanks impotent. after that one solider tries his luck with a bazooka. he gets killed by the creature. the boy then calls dino, which arrived and seems to fight the creature. 

in the korean version there are soliders shooting at the creature with rifles. one guy with a bazooka too. there are some scenes not seen in the indonesian version an/or some scenes are shown, which was maybe shown before (3 soldiers running through the jungle and the boy calls for dino and rides ion his head). 

during the fight with the ape some dialogues are missing (one kidnapped guy and the male alien boss are talking). 

the mother is seen a few seconds longer in the korean vhs 

more dialogues between the alien boss and two guys 

dino is in the korean version longer screaming at the end 

the korean version ends, when the boy met his mother. korean letters say «thank you» and the label company name appears («Sekyung Culture & Video Co., Ltd.»). after that the films ends. 

in the indonesian version there is a short scenes seen, in which the mother tries to teach the boy the abc. after that the boy leave the bed and decide the sleep on the ground of his room. the mother enters the room. the mother sends the boy to the bed and is after that seeing discussing with her husband about the situation. followed by other scenes (boy in the kitchen, boy sees for the first time a train etc.). then the boy and parents are sleeping. they wake up. it appears there is a earthquake. the father gets a phone and gets the information, that there is a monster. the ape was not defeated yet and is now in the city and attacks a electricity tower. planes attack the ape. the ape destroy some houses and after that some planes. the boy clothed in his jungle outfit cames and call his «dino». the dino apears and fights the ape and defeats him. then the boy decides to go back to the island and rides at the head of the dino into the sea and to the island. «the end» text appears.
