Meine Meinung:

Auf Vanessa Morgan wurde ich durch das BIFFF aufmerksam. Dort sah ich als Katzenvater eines ihrer Bücher zum Verkauf (= Avalon) und ich sah sie beim Event mit Fabio Frizzi (Masterclass = sie stellte ihm die englischen Fragen). So war mir Vanessa Morgan, ein Katzenfan, eine Festival-Mitarbeiterin und eine Autorin (von Büchern mit Titeln wie When Animals Attack: The 70 Best Horror Movies with Killer Animals), ein Begriff. Doch erst einige Jahre später stiess ich Online zufällig auf ihr Buch Meow!: Cats in Horror, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy Movies. Und ich fand das Konzept und die Idee, vor allem, weil ich selbst auch Katzen habe, cool, amüsant, interessant und innovativ. So kaufte ich mir das Buch über Amazon England (zum Glück habe ich in England ein Postfach, die hätten nämlich nicht in die Schweiz verschickt).

Der Hauptteil des Buches zeigt chronologisch (von alt zu neu) Filme aus besagten Genres (Fantasy, Sci-Fi und Horror) auf, in denen Katzen eine Rolle spielen. Danach gibt es noch kurze Filmvorstellungen, in denen Katzen vorkommen, aber eher «untergeordnete» Rollen einnehmen. Vanessa Morgan hat nicht alle Filme selbst gesehen, sondern durch Gast-Autoren, Filmwerke zusammentragen lassen. Erwähnt werden das Jahr (wobei ich nie weiss, ob das Herstellungs- oder Veröffentlichungsjahr des Filmes gemeint ist), der Titel, der Regisseur und das Herstellungsland. Dann folgt i.d.R. eine Inhaltsangabe und danach folgt die Meinung/Review der Autoren gepaart mit Hintergrundinfos zu Film und Produktion. Und Bilder und Plakate werden ebenso gezeigt. Ich freute mich, mir Filmtitel für die Wunschliste zu notieren. Auf der anderen Seite empfand ich es als interessant, als ich auf Filme stiess, welche ich schon in der Filmsammlung habe.

Ich war auch überrascht, dass doch einige Titel dabei sind, die ich in dem Buch nicht erwartet hätte. Titel wie Kuroneko, A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse, A Remodeled Beauty, Housu, Evil Cat, The Cat oder Men Behind the Sun. Bei anderen Titeln wie Friedhof der Kuscheltiere, Schlafwandler (Stephen King), The Black Cat (Edgar Allan Poe) oder Felidae war ich hingegen nicht überrascht, diese anzutreffen. Ebenso Filmtitel mit Katzen in Gastauftritten wie z.B. Re-Animator, Devil Cat, Two Evil Eyes, Alien, Night of the Creeps oder die kultige Katze mit dem Geburtstagshut aus The Sentinel («Jezebel»). Interessant ist, dass die Autoren im Buch zum Titel A Remodeled Beauty erwähnen, dass es eine Chinesisch synchronisierte Fassung mit englischen Untertiteln geben soll. Das dürfte die weltweit einzige Fassung mit englischen Subs sein. Bei der koreanischen Version (die es nur als alte VHS gibt) fehlt viel bewegtes Material. Ob dieses ominöse VHS mit englischen Untertiteln gar länger wäre? Filmhistorisch eine interessante Frage.

Der Zufall wollte es, dass ich dieses VHS dann auch tatsächlich fand (es ist eine VHS aus Taiwan). Und zwar auf dem Insta Account meines London-Dealers. Sehr cool. Nebst mehreren Cat Ghost Filmen aus Japan wandern diverse Titel auf meiner Wunschliste. Titel wie The Cat Who Wore Sunglasses, Morgiana, Night of a 1000 Cats, The Cat Creature, Blacker Than the Night (Original & Remake), The Legacy, Mr. Patman, Night Evil Soul, Lily C.A.T., diverse familienfreundliche Animes, Strays (bekam ich Mal als defekte LD), Kat, The Cat (Südkorea) oder Meow (Rape & Revenge Titel aus Indien). Bei einigen Titeln bin ich dabei aber auch noch sehr unsicher. Ebenso bei Low-Budget Kram wie Zombie Cats from Mars und Co. Darunter fallen auch einige Kurzfilme. Davon bin ich eigentlich kein Fan, aber mind. einen werde ich mir (Online) sicherlich ansehen. Und einen Titel sah ich Ende letzten Jahres: den seltenen pakistanischen Film The Cat Beast! Auf diesen wurde ich auch nur dank dem Buch aufmerksam. Auch Zufall, dass mein Filmkumpel den als Original-VHS in der Sammlung stehen hatte.

Für Horror-, Fantasy- und Sci-Fi Fans, vorausgesetzt der Leser mag Katzen, ist das amüsante, abwechslungsreiche und informative Pflichtlektüre!
